Inflation eased slightly in December but remained over 10 percent for the second month, straining the wallets of fixed and low income people.
The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) data shows that the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures changes in prices of a basket of goods and services, declined to 10.89 percent in December from 11.38 percent in November.
The decline was attributed to stable food prices especially following the arrival of winter vegetables. Food inflation dropped to 12.92 percent in December, down from 13.80 percent in November.
Also, non-food inflation slid down to 9.26 percent in December, compared to 9.39 percent the previous month. The country has been combating the persistent inflation for more than two years despite several measures taken by the authorities.
The annual average inflation rose to 10.22 percent in November from 10.05 percent a month ago, according to the Bangladesh Bank.
