The Department of Environment (DoE) has advised residents of Dhaka and its surrounding areas to mandatorily wear facemasks when outside their homes, as the air quality index (AQI) reached a very unhealthy level on Monday morning, according to a DoE release.

The statement said: "AQI sometimes reaches a vulnerable level from an unhealthy stage in the capital city Dhaka and its neighbouring areas during this dry season, as the air quality index changes every hour."

The advisory also cautioned sensitive individuals, such as those who are ill, elderly, or children, to avoid going outside unless it is absolutely necessary.

AQI updates are regularly provided through the information from the air quality monitoring centre of DoE on their website DoE AQI Website, the statement added.
