A court in Dhaka has ordered the authorities concerned to confiscate 22 flats, two houses, all plots and lands of Padma Bank's (former Farmers Bank) former chairman Chowdhury Nafis Sharafat, his wife and son.
Responding to an appeal of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain passed the order on Tuesday (January 7).
ACC's public prosecutor (PP) Mahmud Hossain Jahangir confirmed it.
The ACC and court sources said the anti-graft body's deputy director Masudur Rahman submitted an application to the court seeking confiscation of immovable properties of Padma Bank's (former Farmers Bank) former chairman Chowdhury Nafis Sharafat, his wife Anjuman Ara Shahid and son Chowdhury Rahib Safwan Sharafat. The ACC's public prosecutor (PP) Mahmud Hossain Jahangir placed his arguments in favour of the application. After the hearing, the court ordered to confiscate the houses, flats, plots and lands in their names.
According to the ACC's report submitted to the court, there are 10 flats in the name of Chowdhury Nafis Sharafat at different places in the capital including Gulshan. He has a 20-storeyed house at Gulshan-2. Apart from these, he has a 7.5 katha residential plot at Purbachal. Moreover, he owns 25 kathas of land in Badda and Gazipur.
In the name of Anjuman Ara Shahid, wife of Chowdhury Nafis Sharafat, there are five flats in the capital. She also has a four-storeyed house on a 7.5 katha of land in Basundhara Residential Area. Besides, the ACC has detected 13 kathas of land in her name in the capital.
On behalf of the ACC, the court was informed in written that Chowdhury Nafis Sharafat embezzled Tk 887 crore through fraudulent practices with the Padma Bank customers and abusing his power. The anti-graft watchdog is investigating the complaint.
Besides, the existence of immovable properties in the names of Chowdhury Nafis Sharafat, his wife and son have been found in different parts of the country. The ACC learnt that the such a huge wealth was accumulated through resorting to massive corruption.
