LALMOHAN, BHOLA, Jan 7: Md Arif, 18, was the only son of day-labourer Md Yusuf and Farida Begum. His parents had a dream centring him. But he was killed in police firing during July-August Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka's Jatrabari area.

Arif's father Md Yusuf has been living at Munsi Bari in Chadpur area under Ward No. 8 at Lord Hardinge Union in Lalmohan Upazila of Bhola District. He maintained education for Arif up to Alim second year at Lord Hardinge Fazil Madrasa. But, due to family hardship, Arif could not continue his education. In July last, he came to Dhaka to earn money by doing job in a hotel. But after 17-18 days, he was shot by police during the uprising.

On July 19, during desperate police firing in rally in Jatrabari area, a bullet hit his right eye, and it went out through his head. Later on, he was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), but on-duty doctor declared him dead.

He was taken to the hospital and then home by his maternal cousin Md Shahabuddin.

Md Shahabuddin said, "On July 19 Arif went out for hotel purchases and fell into police firing. Later on, I came to know from people he has been shot down. I rushed there and took him to a local hospital. But, from there, he was   referred to DMCH.   But on-duty doctor declared him dead."

"We took him home on July 20 at 9pm. His mother is still crying. Now what would be the future of his two sisters?" he added.

His mother Farida Begum said, "I would talk with him every day after he went to Dhaka. He would say that without talking with me, he could not sleep at night. I talked with him lastly before being killed on July 19. He inquired about us. It was my last talk. "

"Now I think he has gone to Allah. I demand the highest trial of my son's killing" she added.

His father Md Yusuf said, "Arif was the only son among our six children. We have been directionless. His mother cries always.

To support the hardship of the family, he went to Dhaka for earning. In Dhaka he would work at a hotel with his maternal cousin. After 17-18 days of going there, he died after being gunshot. I maintained my family somehow by working agricultural works. I am old now. I get it difficult to run my family. Two of my daughters are running education. In all accounts, I am hiccupping. I no longer can tolerate such trouble."

"I can't stop crying of his mother. She has been almost mad. Already I am affected with various diseases. Now I am in tension with my daughters. Their education has been uncertain. I have got some donations from different political parties and the upazila administration. I demand exemplary punishment for the killers of my son," he added.

Lalmohan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Shah Aziz said, "The list of martyred and injured people of this upazila has been sent to the department concerned".
