The body of an elderly Bangladeshi man was discovered in Gournagar area of India’s Tripura, two days after he went missing from his home at Habiganj district in Bangladesh.
Zahur Ali, 60, son of Mansub Ullah from Paschim Dulna village in Chunarughat upazila, reportedly crossed into India through the Manikbhandar area near the Guibil border outpost on Monday, according to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).
Locals in Tripura's Gournagar area spotted a body lying by the roadside and informed Indian authorities. Officers from Khowai Police Station recovered the body and transported it to Khowai District Hospital, where Zahur was pronounced dead.
Family members revealed that Zahur, who reportedly had mental health issues, had been working as a security guard in Dhaka and returned to his village on January 4 while on leave. The next day, he left home with clothes, stating he planned to sell them, but never returned.
Indian media reported the discovery of the body, and Zahur's family identified him from photos shared on social media on Tuesday morning.
An investigation into the cause of Zahur's death is underway by Indian police, while the BGB confirmed that the body would be handed over to Bangladeshi authorities following the inquiry.
