A clash erupted between students from Prime Asia University and police at the main gate of the Secretariat on Tuesday.  Police charged batons and dispersed students of the university while they were protesting in front of the Secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident took place around 2.30pm when the students were protesting for various demands including the removal of Board of Trustees (BOT) and assurance of a permanent campus.

Khalid Monsur, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahbagh Police Station, told  that a group of Primeasia University students were protesting at the Secretariat. Some of them also banged on the entrance, creating a chaotic situation. Police then took action to disperse the protesters.

However, the law enforcers did not open fire or use tear gas to disperse the students, said the OC, adding that students should refrain from protesting at the Secretariat as there is a ban on holding protests there.

The protesting students presented various demands, including the removal of the trustee board chairman and the establishment of a permanent campus. Following this, a chase and counter-chase took place between the students and the policemen, with the police charging batons and lobbing stun grenades at them, according to police and witnesses.

The incident was broadcast live by various media outlets. The live videos show police charging batons on students. Some policemen were even seen kicking a student who had fallen during the chase.

Earlier, a four-member delegation from the university had entered the Secretariat building to meet the Education Adviser. They were scheduled to meet the Adviser at 4:30pm.

"However, a larger group of students, who had been waiting outside, became involved in a verbal altercation with the police," said an official.

The confrontation intensified as police used batons and fired two blank shots in an effort to disperse the crowd.

On August 26, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police placed an indefinite ban on holding any type of meeting, gathering, procession, rally, or demonstration in areas surrounding the Bangladesh Secretariat and the Chief Adviser's official residence at the State Guest House Jamuna.
