A Narayanganj court on Wednesday acquitted all accused, including the former president of Narayanganj district Chhatra Dal, Zakir Khan, in connection with the businessman Sabbir Alam Khandaker murder case.
Narayanganj Additional District and Sessions Judge Mominul Islam passed the order after concluding the hearing in the case.
District Public Prosecutor Abul Kalam Azad Jakir told the media that BNP leader Taimur Alam Khandaker filed the murder case against some named and unnamed individuals for the killing of his brother, Sabbir Alam Khandaker, in 2003.
Though Zakir Khan's name was not mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR) of the case, the police submitted a charge sheet against several individuals, including Zakir Khan.
The court acquitted all accused, including Zakir Khan, as the allegations brought against them were not proved beyond reasonable doubt, the Public Prosecutor said.
Sabbir was the founding director and former vice-president of the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), an association of garment owners in the country. During the Clean Heart Operation in early 2003, Sabbir was vocal against miscreants. Addressing a meeting in the presence of local administration, he urged people to attend his funeral if he was killed by miscreants.
He was shot dead by assassins near his home in the Masdair area of Narayanganj city on 18 February 2003, a few days after making the call.
