A local union parishad (UP) chairman was arrested in a case filed over assaulting a Santal woman in Gaibandha.
The arrestee is Rafiqul Islam, chairman of Rajahar Union Parishad of Gobindaganj in the district.
Superintendent of Gaibandha police Nishat Angela said that a team of Gobindaganj police station arrested the main accused Rafiqul from Pritam Hotel under Shahbagh Police Station in Dhaka at around 8.15AM on Wednesday.
Earlier on Friday (January 3), morning, UP chairman Rafiqul and his people filled up 16 decimal lands belonging to Santals by forging documents.
Victim's son British Soren alleged that Rafiqul beat up a Santal woman, as some Santal men and women protested the incident and in the night followers of Rafiqul set fire to the his sister's house.
Following the incident, the next day, Philomina Hansda’s other son, Julius Soren filed a case against Rafiqul, his brother, and other 4 named and 20 to 25 unnamed persons, said police.
According to the sources, the Gaibandha district unit BNP expelled Rafiqul from all posts and positions following the incident.
On Tuesday (January 8), 47 prominent citizens of the country issued a statement in the media, demanding punishment for those involved in the incident.
