BNP Standing Committee Member Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Senior Joint Secretary General Adv Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and other 171 leaders and activists of the party have been acquitted from the charges of subversion in a case filed with Ramna Police Station in Dhaka.
Judge Shihab Uddin Islam of Dhaka Special Tribunal-16 issued the order on Wednesday allowing a discharge petition filed by the defence.
January 8, 2025, was fixed for holding hearing on charge framing in the case.
The other prominent accused in the case are -- BNP vice-chairman Advocate Joynul Abedin, health affairs secretary Dr Md Rafikul Islam, law affairs secretary Barrister Kaiser Kamal, organising secretary Shama Obayed, Nobi Ullah Nobi,Saiful Alam Nirob and Habibun Nabi Khan Sohel.
According to the case documents, on January 30, 2018, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was returning home after appearing at a special court located near the old central jail on Nazimuddin Road in Dhaka.
BNP leaders and activists gathered on the street near Paribagh area to greet their and were chanting slogans. They, however, engaged in a scuffle with the police then. Later, police filed the case.
Following the incident, Sub-Inspector Md Mohibullah of Ramna Model police station filed a case.
On January 29, 2020, after an investigation, Detective Branch's (DB) Ramna Zonal Team Sub-Inspector Mohammad Saiful Islam Khan submitted the charge sheet to the court.
