Demand for date juice on rise, trees on decline at Nageshwari

NAGESHWARI, KURIGRASM, Jan 8: Date juice demand is high but number of trees is less in Nageshwari Upazila of the district.

This winter time, extractors are lifting down their filled juice pots every morning, with presence of locals coming for purchasing fresh juice. 

Per glass juice is selling at Tk 10. But juice finishes quickly.

Extractor Gaffar Mia said, coming from Rajahahi he has been extracting date juice for the last five years; this year he has taken lease of 28 trees at Tk 300 per tree.

"We face no problem in juice selling. Public gathering is always under trees," he added.

He further said, "If there is surplus of juice in any day, we boil it to make molasses. Demand of date molasses is also high. It sells at Tk 500 per kg."

Haridas, Shahidul Islam and many locals said, there were many date trees along both sides of Purba Sanchuarvita Road; but on different needs, many of these were cut down.

A date tree owner, Anisur Rahman Swapon said, earlier he had 40 trees; few trees died; few were cut down; remaining ones have been given lease to extractors.
 
Every day people gather under his trees for fresh juice.
