SHAHJADPUR, SIRAJGANJ, Jan 8: A farmer was beaten to death by a group of youths over protesting drug consumption near his house in Shahjadpur Upazila of the district on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred in Putia Village under the upazila at around 9 pm.
Deceased Azim Uddin Sarkar, 55, son of late Moslem Uddin Sarker, was a resident of the area.
Local sources said that Azim encountered a group of young men consuming cannabis near a mustard field while returning home. He confronted them and accused them of being thieves, which enraged the youths.
They then attacked him, beating him severely before fleeing the scene. His family members rushed him to a village doctor, who declared him dead upon arrival.
Being informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Sirajganj Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Angered by the incident, local villagers detained a motorcycle believed to belong to the attackers and informed the police.
Officer-in-Charge of Shahjadpur Police Station Aslam Ali said, "We have not found any visible injury marks on the deceased's body. The exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy. Legal action will be taken based on the report."
