RAJSHAHI, Jan 8: Different categories of shops on footpaths of the Dhaka-Rajshahi highway in Sadar, Puthia, Jolmolia and Baneshwar upazilas of the district are causing immense public sufferings.

Even permanent shops of TV, freeze, gas cylinder, and corrugated tins have also occupied spaces of the footpaths.

Traffic jam and public sufferings mount up on haat days of Baneshwar and Jolmolia. Accidents are occurring regularly.

During Awami League regime, these footpath shops were opened by applying power of influence in association with the upazila administration. There is no initiative to evict these.

Shoppers of Masjid Market near an illegal stair said," Because of this stair our shops are not seen from distance. We demand removal of that illegal stair."

A pedestrian Rejaul Islam complained, the bazaar road is very un-wide; auto-rickshaw, van, motor cycle and other vehicles move on this road; now occupying footpath space causes traffic jam.

Another Zakir Hossain at Baneshwar Bazar said, "Due to the footpath occupying we have to move on the road. In the last week, my friend committed accident when moving on the road. Women are suffering mostly."

Footpath occupying shoppers said, "For running shops on footpaths, we don't have to count monthly rents. We don't need trade licences from union or municipality. We just need sitting place. No other hassle."

Pedestrians in Sadar, Puthia, Baneshwar, and Jolmolia areas said, "Footpaths were built for us. But these are occupied with shops. We can't move because of these. Our request to the administration - free the footpaths to ease public moving."

Puthia Upazila Nirbahi Officer AKM Noor Hossain said, "Nobody complained to us in this connection. Yet it will be raised at monthly law and order meeting. This meeting is attended by OC and union chairmen. After discussing with them, drive to free footpath will be conducted."
