Dhaka University students have issued a striking ultimatum, declaring that they will occupy the newly constructed 20-storey building intended for staff unless a permanent solution is found for the ongoing student housing crisis.
On Wednesday (8 January) at 1:00 PM, Mashfiur Amin Shuvo, a DU student, announced the warning on behalf of the students during a demonstration in front of the Vice-Chancellor's residence.
Shuvo cited an incident where the ceiling plaster of Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall caused injury to a student the previous day. He stated, "Instead of addressing the students' concerns, the administration has prioritised constructing a new building for staff in Palashi. We declare today that no staff member will be allowed to occupy that building until the housing crisis for students is resolved."
He further demanded that the building be temporarily converted into a dormitory until permanent student housing is built. Shuvo warned, "If swift action is not taken, we will mobilise students hall by hall, and on a set date, we will take over the new staff building."
