After over seven years in a touching moment BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia  embraced her elder son, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at London's Heathrow International Airport on Wednesday.

His wife Zubaida Rahman and Tarique Rahman  greeted his mother with open arms.

The mother and son became emotional as Khaleda embraced Tarique, the reunion   brought them together after years of trials and tribulations.

Thousands of leaders and activists of the BNP UK unit received their leader defying cold weather.

BNP Chairperson's press wing member Shamsuddin Didar told the Daily Observer, "The air ambulance carrying madam (Khaleda Zia) touched down at Heathrow Airport at 9:05am on Wednesday (UK time)."

He said, "Admission procedure of madam (Khaleda Zia) was completed earlier. After she reached London, Tarique Rahman took his mother from Heathrow Airport to the London Clinic in central London."

Didar said, "The car carrying her left Heathrow at 10:15 am and reached the clinic at 11 am. Our Acting Chairman's wife, Zubaida Rahman, accompanied them during the journey."

The Acting High Commissioner of Bangladesh to the United Kingdom, Mohammad Hazrat Ali Khan also received Khaleda Zia at the airport with flowers, said Didar.

BNP's UK chapter President MA Malek, General Secretary Koyser M Ahmad and many other leaders and activists were present at the airport to welcome Khaleda.

After completing immigration formalities, Khaleda Zia left the airport  through the Royal VIP Gate of Terminal 4, for the hospital.

The air ambulance took off  HSIA one hour and 46 minutes late, as Khaleda's convoy moved slowly through crowds on both sides of the road up to the airport.

On Tuesday night she left Dhaka for London aboard a special air ambulance for advanced  medical treatment.

Senior BNP leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and standing committee members, saw off Khaleda at the airport.

Khaleda Zia was given a warm sendoff  by thousands of BNP supporters and well-wishers standing on both sides of the road up to the airport.

Khaleda's journey from her Gulshan residence to the airport a nine-  kilometre distance took two hours and thirty-nine minutes due to the thousands of people standing along the road.

The special Royal Air Ambulance, an Airbus A319 provided by the Qatar Emir, was scheduled to depart at 10:00 pm but was delayed until 11:47 pm.

Khaleda's doctors have been advocating for her treatment abroad ever since she was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis in late 2021.

Despite the severity of her health condition, she was denied permission by the Awami League government to leave the country to receive badly needed medical treatment abroad.

On August 6, a day after the fall of the Awami League government, Khaleda was set free paving the way for her overseas treatment.

Khaleda Zia, three-time former Prime Minister,  has been battling multiple health issues, including liver cirrhosis, diabetes, arthritis, and complications involving her kidneys, lungs, heart and eyes.

Tarique, his wife and daughter have been living in London since 2008.

This marks Khaleda's first overseas trip since 2017.

On July 15, 2017, Khaleda went to London to receive medical treatment and  spend time with her family members and celebrate Eid-ul-Azha with them during her three month stay there.

The 79-year-old former Prime Minister, departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 11:46pm on Tuesday, for London via Doha on the Qatar Royal Family's Airbus A319 Air Ambulance.

From London, Khaleda Zia will fly to the United States for receiving medical treatment at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.

On October 26, 2023, a team of three specialist doctors from the United States performed the transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) procedure to address fluid accumulation in her stomach and chest, and her bleeding  liver.
