LAXMIPUR, Jan 9: Cholera, strong-diarrhoea, is spreading rapidly in the district due to severe cold.

The cholera is a rota virus caused disease.
Doctors and nurses of the Laxmipur 100-bed district Sadar Hospital are hiccupping to treat all patients because of manpower shortage and bed crisis.

Patients in diarrhoea and child wards have been 5-7 times higher.

According to the hospital sources, daily 350-450 patients are being admitted to the hospital while, in the Outdoor, 1,400-1,500 patients are treated daily.

Because of bed crisis patients are kept on floor, stairs and in front of doctor's chambers.

On Monday, 77 cholera patients in the 15-bed Child Ward and 55 patients in the 10-bed Diarrhoea Ward were admitted.

People in the district are in panic about rapid spreading of the cholera if urgent measure is not taken.

They strongly demand running the 250-bed capacity new building of the hospital, built at about Tk 39 crore two years back.

Executive Member of District Patient Welfare Association Abul Kasem said, it is urgent to open the   new 250-bed building.

Ward In-charge Senior Staff Nurse Nilu Das said, every day in the 10-bed Diarrhoea Ward over 60-70 patients are admitted. We are hiccupping to provide services due to manpower crisis. Yet we are continuing our services."

A child specialist, Dr Ismail Hossain said, "Rota virus has caused the cholera to appear. It is yet to take alarming form.  We need to be careful about children.  Freeze food needs to be avoided. Don't keep raw food with freeze items."
He advised wearing warm clothes.

Acting Civil Surgeon (CS) and Sadar Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr Kazi Abdul Momin said, the rota virus is still under control.

"There are adequate medicines in the hospital. The disease situation at the time of the flood time has been better. But people will have to be careful about food. We also advise wearing mask to avoid cold and dust."

CS also asked for taking patients to the hospital quickly if conditions deteriorate.
