Five people were killed in separate road accidents in three districts - Noakhali, Mymensingh and Meherpur.
NOAKHALI: A man was killed after being hit by a bus in Companiganj Upazila of the district on Thursday.
The accident took place in the morning in front of Karalia vegetable storehouse on the Kabirhat-Basurhat road under the upazila.
The deceased was identified as Md Main Uddin, 50, son of Mojibul Haque, a resident of Ward No. 2 under Char Kakra Union in the upazila.
It was known that Main Uddin was a labourer of the Karalia vegetable storehouse. On Thursday morning, a Kabirhat-bound bus of 'Basurhat Super Paribahan' hit him in front of the vegetable storehouse while he was crossing the road carrying a sack of onion on his head. He was critically injured at that time.
Locals then rescued the injured and rushed him to Companiganj Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Main Uddin dead.
However, locals seized the killer bus and handed it over to the police, but the bus driver managed to flee the scene.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Companiganj Police Station (PS) Gazi Mohammad Fouzul Azim confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.
HALUAGHAT, MYMENSINGH: Two motorcyclists were killed when their motorcycle hit a sand-laden parked truck from behind in Haluaghat Upazila of the district early Thursday.
Another person who was seriously injured in the accident has been admitted to hospital.
The accident occurred at around 4:45 am in front of the Haluaghat Fire Service Station.
One of the deceased was identified as Al Aksa, a resident of Dapunia area in Mymensingh City while the identity of another could not be known immediately.
Police and local sources said that a motorcycle carrying two persons hit a sand-laden truck which was parked in front of Haluaghat Fire Service Station at early hours. The two motorcyclists died on the spot at that time.
Being informed, police recovered the bodies.
Haluaghat PS OC Abul Khair confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.
MEHERPUR: Two college students lost their lives in a tragic road accident on the Meherpur-Kushtia regional highway in Gangni Upazila of the district on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Siam Hossain, 18, and Abdullahel Baki, 18. Siam was the son of Alek Hossain, a Saudi Arab expatriate, while Baki was the son of Sohrab Hossain alias Sentu, also a Saudi Arab expatriate. Both of them were residents of Pirtala Village in Gangni Upazila and eleventh graders at Kushtia Islamia College.
The accident occurred at approximately 3:30 pm when the motorcycle, carrying the two students, collided with a bus of 'Rafraf Paribahan', according to Gangni PS OC Bani Israel.
Siam died instantly at the scene, while Baki was rushed to Kushtia General Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Locals detained the bus involved in the collision and handed it over to the police.
However, the bodies of the deceased will be transferred to the 250-bed General Hospital in Meherpur for necessary procedures, OC Bani Israel added.
