Four die after consuming ‘toxic liquor’ in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Jan 10: Four people have died and four others fell sick after consuming homemade alcohol in the district.

The deceased were identified as Montaz, 42, son of Soleman Ali, and Tutul, 28, son of Moyez Mandal, residents of Durgapur Village in Mohanpur Upazila of Rajshahi, Juwel, 25, son of Tuzammel of Karisha Village, and Ekdil, 50, hailed from Mongla.

It was known that eight people bought homemade alcohol from one Hannan of Dhorsha Village in Mohanpur, and then consumed it in the house of Montaz at Durgapur. After drinking the alcohol, Montaz, Tutul and Juwel died on Wednesday and five others fell seriously sick.

They were then taken to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), where Ekdil died on Thursday while undergoing treatment.
Pintu, 35, son of Kashem Ali, Akbar, 46, son of late Jahan Ali, Mona, 28, son of Sayeed Ali, and Feroz Hossain, 28, son of Afsar Ali, residents of Durgapur Village, are currently undergoing treatment at the RMCH. 

Dr Sankar K Biswas, spokesperson for RMCH, said that the condition of the four patients in the hospital is stable and they are under observation.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Helena Akhter said that two people have been arrested in connection with the incident. The arrestees were Mukul, 39, of Motihar Village, and Joni, 42, of Dhopaghata Village.

Meanwhile, Masum Rana, son one of the deceased persons, filed a case in this this regard.

However, police are investigating the matter and trying to arrest others involved in the incident, ASP Helena added.

After completing legal formalities, police handed over the bodies to the families of the deceased. Later on, the bodies were buried with permission of police.
