Mustard crops attract tourists at Chalanbeel

GURUDASPUR, NATORE, Jan 10: Now, there are growing mustard crops in vast areas of Chalanbeel in Gurudaspur Upazila of the district. 

Both green and blooming yellow fields of mustard are attracting locals and tourists.   People are coming from distant areas to see the beauty of mustard fields.    

Along with farmers, honey cultivators are passing busy time in handling their honey boxes and processing honey.  

According to official sources, this year, mustardcrop  has been cultivated on about 1.50 lakh hectares (ha) of land in the Chalanbel area, including 46,303 ha in the main Chalanbeel part.

The cultivated lands included 7,908 ha in Gurudaspur Upazila and 8,350 ha in Singra-Natore, 11,805 ha in Tarash-Sirajganj, 6,330 ha in Chatmohar, and 5,560 ha in Bhangura-Pabna, and 6,350 ha in Atrai Upazila in Naogaon District.

A farmer of Bilsa Village Golam Sardar said, he has cultivated mustard on 65 bighas of land at a cost of Tk 10,000-11,000 per bigha; if there is no natural disaster, they will get a per bigha profit of Tk 4,000-5,000, if fair price is available.

Per bigha mustard yielding of 5-6 maunds is likely. Usually per maund sells at Tk 2,800-3,000.

According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension, this year over 500 honey growers have installed about 1,500 boxes in the Chalanbeel area, with a honey production target of 1,500 tonnes worth about Tk 30 crore.

While talking with this correspondent of The Daily Observer mustard flower loving travellers said, the Chalanbeel changes its shape by seasons. "Throbbing water attracts us. Also brightly grown Boro fields fill our minds," they added. 
        
Gurudaspur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Salma  Aktar said, in different times there are different shapes of Chalanbeel, which attract tourists.
