A court in Chapainawabganj on Thursday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment in a drugs case filed in 2020.
Chapainawabganj District and Sessions Court Judge Md Mizanur Rahman handed down the verdict in the afternoon in presence of the convict.
The condemned convict is Liakat Ali, 36, son of late Lokman Mandal, a resident of Chandipur Ghonapara area under Nayalabhanga Union in Shibganj Upazila of Chapainawabganj.
The court also fined him Tk 5,000, and in default, he has to suffer six more months in jail.
According to the prosecution, during an anti-drug drive in Battala Bazar area under Nayalabhanga union, a team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Liakat along with 1.5 kilograms of heroin on November 5, 2020.
On the same day, Nayeb Subedar of RAB-5 Md Abu Taleb filed a case under the Narcotics Control Act with Shibganj Police Station (PS) against Liakat Ali.
After investigation, the Investigating Officer of the case Sub-inspector Ataur Hossain of Shibganj PS submitted the charge-sheet to the court against Liakat Ali on November 30, 2020.
