AMTALI, BARGUNA, Jan 10: Use of low-quality construction materials was complained in building a road from Khuriar Kheyaghat to Dhankhali GC at Sadar Union in Amtali Upazila of the district.

But the Upazila Engineering office did not take any measures.

According to field sources, the length of the road from Khuriar Kheyaghat to Dhankhali GC is 4,300 metres. Its construction tender was invited by Barguna Engineering Department.

A total of Tk 3,04,95,594 was allocated for the work.

After tender on December 21, 2023, contracting firm Barendra got the work order. The work was supposed to be completed by April 21, 2024. But the contractor left the site after doing some works in June. Later on, he re-started the work in December.

But he started it with low-quality stones and chips.  According to the schedule, he did not maintain the designed width and depth of the road.

After informing matter to the Upazila Engineer office, no step was taken. Already the office paid bill of first instalment of the completed work.

A recent visit found men of the contractor working with low-quality materials. Locals, Hasan and Harun said, the contractor is carrying out work with low-quality brick chips; this road will not sustain for a long time; crores of government taka will be wasted.

They demanded immediate action against the contractor and removing all low-quality materials and building a sustainable road.
When contacted, contractor Shahin Talukdar denied use of low-quality materials.

"So far, I have completed 2,100 metre road work. I will start the remaining work soon."

Upazila Engineer Md Idris Ali said, the contractor has been given bill of the works he completed.

Barguna Executive Engineer Md Mehedi Hasan Khan said, if the work is done, the contractor must be given bill; yet, the contractor used some low quality materials in some places of the road. But after inspection, these were changed.
