Bean turns beneficial to Sonargaon farmers

SONARGAON, NARAYANGANJ, Jan 10: Bean is widely cultivated in Sonargaon Upazila of the district.
According to local sources, bean is mostly farmed in Sonmandi and Boidderbar unions in the upazila. Along roadsides and beels, the bean is being cultivated. Bean is also being farmed in home yards, pond banks and land isles.

Commercial entrepreneurship is growing up centring the bean. Beans are exported abroad from the upazila.
Bean species included Birainnia, Ghito Kanchon, Kartika, Noldok, Kajol Gouri, Puitta, Hatirban, Boukani, Ayumi, Koibhaja, and Khoiya.

A rich species of bean, Pusha Ali Prolific, has been developed by Indian Agriculture Research Institute. This species grow advance in Bangladesh, and yields are good. 

Advance farming of these species is increasing in the upazila.

A grower of Batirchar Village at Sonmandai Union Mukul Hasan said, he cultivated different vegetables on his home yard and about two bighas of land.

Youth Humayun Kabir of Barodir Algirchar also cultivated bean along with other vegetables in his house areas. He said, wholesalers come from Dhaka and other areas to purchase beans from fields.

Humayun and Mukuol said, if bean is cultivated in advance, they get higher profit.
In modern system bean, can be farmed without insecticide, they added.

A grower of Monnar Bag area at Boiddrerbazar Union Alam Chan said, "I have cultivate different vegetables including bean in advance on three bighas of land. During the full season, prices are not good."

An exporter, SM Jahangir Hossain said, "We export different vegetables of Sonargaon mostly. Yearly export of bean is 150 to 200 tonnes worth about Taka one crore. One grower can get a profit of Tk 2-3 lakh in a season."

Sonargaon Upazila Agriculture Officer Afroza Sultana said, different vegetables are widely cultivated in Sonmandi and Boidderbazar unions in Sonargaon Upazila.  

"Dhaka's exporters can easily collect vegetables from Sonargaon as the location is nearby. They export insect-free vegetables."

Upazila agriculture office is working widely to ensure insect-free vegetables, she added.

She further said, huge market demand has been created abroad for vegetables including bean of Sonargaon.
