Tensions flared near the border area of Lalmonirhat's Patgram upazila, as the Indian Border Security Force's (BSF) attempt to construct a barbed wire fence along the zero line was thwarted by Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Friday.
The incident occurred along the Munshipara border near international border marker (DAMP) 8/41 in Dahgram union's Munshipara area.
According to international border laws, no construction can take place within 150 yards of the zero line on either side. Violating the laws, construction workers, under the supervision of BSF personnel from Arun Camp of the Raninnagar-6 Battalion, began installing iron posts and barbed wire along the zero line at approximately 11 AM on Friday.
Upon receiving information, a patrol team from BGB's Panbari Camp under Rangpur's 51 Battalion rushed to the scene and immediately objected to the illegal activity.
Despite BGB's protests, the BSF persisted, leading to heightened tensions between the two sides. The situation was defused when the BGB's firm resistance forced the BSF and the workers to halt construction and retreat 150 yards into Indian territory.
Local residents expressed fear and concern over the incident. Locals said, "The BSF is building a barbed wire fence along the zero line, ignoring all regulations. We, the people of Dahgram, are living in fear."
"The BSF managed to construct a section of the fence approximately three feet high over half a kilometer before the BGB intervened. The situation has created an atmosphere of panic among the villagers," they said.
The border area remains under heavy observation, with both sides strengthening their presence.
Jamil Ahmed, the company commander of BGB's Panbari Camp, confirmed the incident, stating, "The BGB patrol team has increased vigilance along the border to prevent further violations." However, he refrained from providing additional details.
When contacted, Lieutenant Colonel Selim Al Din, commanding officer of the Rangpur 51 Battalion, stated that the situation is under control and more information would be provided later.
The incident has intensified the already sensitive atmosphere in the border region, with residents and officials keeping a close watch on developments. Both sides have stationed additional personnel, and efforts are being made to ensure compliance with international border laws.
