The cricketing world is paying heartfelt tributes to Bangladesh's trailblazing opener Tamim Iqbal, who announced retirement from international cricket ending a glittering career that began in 2007.

In a poignant message, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) wrote, "An extraordinary chapter closes as Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh's finest opening batsman, announces his retirement from international cricket. From iconic centuries to countless unforgettable moments, your legacy will forever shine in the hearts of cricket fans. Thank you for making us believe, showing how to fight and overcome impossible odds, and inspiring us to dream again!"

Tamim retires as Bangladesh's highest ODI run-scorer amassing 8,357 runs far ahead of Mushfiqur Rahim's 7,793. He scored 15,192 international runs across formats before being overtaken by Mushfiqur with 15,300 runs. Known for his consistency, Tamim registered 94 fifties and 25 centuries to become the only Bangladeshi batsman to score centuries in all three formats.

Long-time teammate Mushfiqur Rahim took to Facebook to reflect on their camaraderie:
"You've been an outstanding ambassador for Bangladesh cricket and a world-class batter. I'll always remember our partnership in Dubai when you batted with a split finger, showing your dedication and passion. Happy retirement. You'll be missed on the field, but I'm thankful to have gained such a great friend through cricket."

Mahmudullah highlighted Tamim's immense contributions writing, "Many congratulations on your wonderful achievements throughout an amazing international career. It was a pleasure playing with you and sharing so many memories. Your legacy will always be remembered. I wish you a happy retirement and all the best for your future endeavours."

Najmul Hossain Shanto expressed gratitude for Tamim's influence, stating, "Your cricketing talent, your care and generosity towards your fellow players have impressed me time and again. We will miss your presence on the field terribly, but I respect your thoughtful decision. I am proud to have shared the dressing room with you."

Labelling Tamim's retirement as the "end of an era," Mehidy wrote, "You've been a beacon of inspiration for us all. Your passion, dedication and unwavering guidance have left a mark that words can't capture. Thank you for everything. Your legacy will live on."

Soumya Sarkar struck a reflective tone writing, "Cheers to new beginnings and a lifetime of memories. Retirement isn't the end, it's just the start of a beautiful new chapter. Here's to enjoying the journey ahead. You'll be missed on the field."

Notable among his achievements is the monumental 312-run opening stand with Imrul Kayes against Pakistan in 2015, a record for second-innings opening partnerships in Tests and the highest partnership by Bangladesh in any format. As ODI captain, Tamim led Bangladesh in 37 matches securing 21 wins with a 60% success rate, the best in the country's history.
