KAHAROLE, DINAJPUR, Jan 11: At present, growers are passing busy time in planting of onion saplings in Kaharole Upazila of the district.
Amid severe cold, agriculture labourers and growers start their works in the morning and continue till evening.
According to sources at the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE)-Kaharole, this season onion will be cultivated on 175 hectares of land in six unions of the upazila.
A visit to different fields on Tuesday found growers, family members and labourers lifting saplings and land preparing.
Sapling sellers Md Abdul Momen Chowdhury and Afsar Ali of Jagannathpur and Mohdipur villages at Mukundapur Union said, they have raised seedbeds of 7 kilogram seeds on 15 and 24 decimals at about Tk 30,000.
On Saturday, they sold saplings of Tk 70,000-75,000 at Kagharole Haat.
Another Afzal Hossain said, "This year I cultivated onion on three bighas. If weather goes fair, I hope good yielding. But we are counting extra costs of labour, fertiliser, medicine and seeds. "
"We are concerning about loss," he added.
Upazila Agriculture Officer Mallika Rani Sehanbish said, "Our agriculture officials are providing advice and assistance so that onion yielding is good. This year's farming can exceed the target."
