At least twelve shops have been gutted in a fire in Maijdi, the district town of Noakhali early Sunday.
The fire broke out around 12:30 am on Saturday (January 11) in several shops opposite the Public Works Office on the town's main road and on the south side of the Hawkers Market.
The affected traders have claimed that the fire caused damage worth crores of taka. However, no casualties were reported. Fire service could not provide a cause for the fire.
Traders said that half an hour after everyone closed their shops and left, local people suddenly saw flames in the Nupur Market. Within moments, the flames spread all around. Twelve shops were burnt down. The army, police and students worked together to control the fire.
Fire Service Noakhali Station Deputy Assistant Director Abdullah Harun Pasha said on information, 13 units of fire service tried for an hour to bring the fire under control. Before that, 12 shops had completely burned down. Initially, the cause of the fire was not known. It is believed that the fire started from an electrical short circuit. The immediate extent of the damage has not been assessed.
