Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested three people for their alleged involvement in stealing gold jewellery from a shop in Simanta Sambhar Shopping Complex at Dhanmondi in Dhaka and recovered some stolen gold ornaments.

The arrestees were Md Rubel, 28, Shafiq alias Sohel, 35, and Saddam Hossain, 31.
Mohammad Nasirul Islam, joint police commissioner (DB South) of DMP, shared the information at a press briefing held at the DMP Media Centre on Sunday.

He said detectives conducted drives in Companyganj and Muradnagar areas of Cumilla district from January 9 to January 11 and arrested the accused with stolen gold ornaments, weighing around 50.8 tola, worth about Tk 70 lakh.

The investigation and operation are continuing to arrest other members of the gang and recover the remaining stolen gold ornaments, he added.

The incident occurred at the 'Crown Diamond and Jewelers' (Shop No. 014 and 015) showroom on the ground floor of the Simanta Sambhar Shopping Complex under Dhanmondi Model Police Station around 1AM on Friday (January 3).

Following the incident, shop owner Kazi Akash filed a case with the Dhanmondi Model Police Station, stating that unidentified thieves had broken the locks of the showroom and stolen gold ornaments weighing 159 tola, worth around Tk 2.50 crore.

The DB inspected the scene and collected video footages. After reviewing the video footage, they found that an organised gang of thieves entered the showroom by cutting the shutter and escaped with gold ornaments in just eight minutes.

The official said that based on the images obtained in the video footage, technical analysis and other intelligence information, the DB police conducted drives on January 9.

They detained Rubel while he was on his way to Chattogram from Cox's Bazar. According to his given information, detectives conducted raid in New Market area adjacent to Debidwar Bazar in Cumilla and detained Sohel.

Based on their given information, 28.14 tolas of stolen gold ornaments and 21.10 tolas of stolen gold ornaments were recovered from two jeweler shops in Companiganj Bazar under Muradnagar Police Station area of Cumilla district. From there, Saddam was arrested.
