The Advisor to the Ministry of Shipping, Brigadier (Retd.) M. Sakhawat Hossain, has announced the formation of a committee to assess the benefits and potential challenges of Ramgarh Land Port in Khagrachari.
He shared the update while addressing journalists following a visit to the site on Sunday.
"The primary objective of constructing Ramgarh port is to facilitate the transport of goods from Chattogram Port to India's northeastern Seven Sisters region through Sabroom via the port. A committee will evaluate how beneficial this port will be for Bangladesh. Based on the committee's findings, further actions, including the port's inauguration and decisions on whether Bangladesh will import goods via this port, will be taken," said Advisor Sakhawat.
He added that discussions are ongoing regarding the port's operational timeline and the introduction of passenger transport services, which will also depend on the committee's recommendations.
Significant progress has been made on the infrastructure development for the port, including the construction of a bridge over the Feni River, a passenger terminal, and an immigration building, with approximately 60% of the work completed. The port was initially scheduled to open on August 14 of last year, but it remains under development.
The inspection was attended by key officials, including Md. Manjarul Mannan, Chairman of the Land Port Authority; Sarwar Alam, Project Director; Colonel S.M. Abul Ehsan, Guimara Sector Commander; Md. Shahiduzzaman, Deputy Commissioner of Khagrachari; Superintendent of Police Arefin Jewel; Ramgarh Upazila Nirbahi Officer Mamata Afrin; and Officer-in-Charge Md. Main Uddin, among others.
