Road mishaps claim 11 lives in seven districts

A total of 11 people including three women were killed and at least 50 others injured in separate road accidents in seven districts - Faridpur, Rajbari, Magura, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Habiganj and Madaripur. 

FARIDPUR: Two people were killed and at least 20 others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a truck in Nagarkanda Upazila of the district on Sunday morning. 

The accident took place in Bashagari area on the Faridpur-Barishal highway under Dangi Union of the upazila at around 7:30 am.
One of the deceased has been identified as Sajjad Khan, 25, the helper of the bus and son of Alef Khan, hailed from Madhukhali in the district, while the identity of another could not be known immediately. 

Quoting locals, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Nagarkanda Police Station (PS) Md Safar Ali said that a passenger bus belonging to 'Alif-Mim Paribahan' was going to Dhaka from Faridpur. When the bus reached Bashagari area on the way, it collided head-on with a truck coming from the opposite direction. The bus fell into a ditch and the truck was twisted, resulting in the casualties.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies.

The injured were rescued and admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital.

However, necessary steps would be taken in this regard, the OC added.

RAJBARI: A bus driver was killed and at least 15 others including two children were injured in a road accident in Kalukhali Upazila of the district on Saturday night.

The accident took place in Goriana area on the Rajbari-Kushtia highway under the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Bacchu Sheikh, 40, son of Munsher Sheikh, a resident of Komarpur Village in the district. He was the driver of a bus of 'Golden Line Paribahan'. 

Police and local sources said that a Dhaka-bound bus of 'Hanif Paribahan' from Kushtia collided head-on with a Kushtia-bound bus of 'Golden Line Paribahan' in Goriana area on the Rajbari-Kushtia highway at night, which left the driver of the 'Golden Line Paribahan' bus Bacchu dead on the spot and at least 15 others including two children seriously injured.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene.

The injured were rescued and admitted to Rajbari Sadar Hospital. 

Rajbari-Kushtia Highway PS OC Harunur Rashid confirmed the incident, adding that a case was filed with the PS in this regard.

MAGURA: A man was killed and another injured after a truck hit their motorcycle in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday night. 

The accident took place in Joka Madrasa intersection of the upazila at around 9 pm. 

The deceased was identified as Ratan Halder, 40, son of Fagirat Halder, a resident of Shialjore Village in the upazila.

Local sources said that a sand-laden truck hit their motorcycle in the area, leaving Ratan dead on the spot. Being informed, police recovered the body.

Injured Rasul Molla was rescued and taken to Magura Sadar Hospital.

Police, however, seized the killer truck but its driver managed to flee the scene.

Magura Sadar PS OC Aiyub Ali confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

CHANDPUR: A boy was killed and five people including his parents were injured when a bus hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Sadar Upazila of the district on Saturday.

The accident took place in Kumardugi area on the Cumilla-Chandpur regional highway under the upazila in the evening.

The deceased was identified as Fahim, 12, son of former councillor Kazi Monir Hossain of Majumdar Bari in Toragarh area under Hajiganj Municipality in the district. 

The injured persons are: Kazi Monir Hossain, 55, his wife Seema Begum, 40, daughter Mithila Akter, 17, son Hridoy, 22, and Hridoy's wife Samia Akter, 19.

Police and local sources said that Kazi Monir Hossain came to Chandpur from Dhaka by launch to go to his village home along with the family members. Then they were going to Hajiganj riding on an auto-rickshaw from Chandpur. On the way, a passenger bus belonging to 'Aidee Paribahan' hit the auto-rickshaw carrying them on the on the Cumilla-Chandpur regional highway in Kumradugi area of Sadar Upazila in the evening. Fahim died on the spot, the auto-rickshaw was twisted and everyone including its driver was seriously injured at that time.

Being informed, police recovered the body from the scene.

The injured persons were rescued and admitted to the local hospital.

Chandpur Model PS OC Md Bahar Mia confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

LAXMIPUR: A teenage boy and a young man were killed and at least nine others injured in separate road accidents in Sadar Upazila of the district.

Laxmipur Sadar PS OC Abdul Monnaf confirmed the accidents on Saturday noon.

A teenager was killed and five others were injured in a head-on collision between a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle in the upazila.

The accident took place in Uttar Hamchhadi Basu Bazar area on the Laxmipur-Ramganj road.

The deceased was identified as Pias Ahmed, 17, son of Mansur Ahmed, a resident of Mirzapur Village under Uttar Hamchhadi Union in the upazila.

Police and local sources said that a motorcycle collided head-on with a CNG-run auto-rickshaw in Uttar Hamchhadi Basu Bazar area on the Laxmipur-Ramganj road, which left six people including Pias, Sifat, Tamim, Sabbir and Jahed seriously injured. 

Locals rescued the injured and took them to Laxmipur Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared Pias Ahmed dead. 

Of the injured, Sifat and Tamim were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for better treatment.

On the other hand, a young man was killed and four others were injured in another road accident in Sadar Upazila.

The accident took place in Piarapur area on the Laxmipur-Ramgati road of the upazila. 

The deceased was identified as Farhad Hossain, 23, a resident of Banchanagar area under Laxmipur Municipality. 

It was known that a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle collided with each other in Piarapur area on the Laxmipur-Ramgati road, which left Farhad dead on the spot. 

Being informed, police recovered the bodies of the both deceased.

Necessary steps would be taken in these connections, the OC added.

HABIGANJ: Three female employees of 'Badsha Pioneer Company' were killed after an unidentified vehicle hit their human hauler in Madhabpur Upazila of the district on Saturday morning.

The deceased were identified as Urmi Akter, 20, Dilara Begum, 32, and Rumi Akter, 25. All of them were senior operators of 'Badsha Pioneer Company'.

It was known that the three female employees of the company were going to their workplace in the morning riding on a battery-run human hauler, locally named as Tomtom. On the way, an unidentified vehicle hit the Tomtom near the company at around 8:30 am. The human hauler turned turtle on the road and got twisted at that time, and Urmi, Dilara and Rumi died on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the bodies from the scene.

Madhabpur PS Official Saidul Haque confirmed the incident, adding that legal action would be taken in this regard.

MADARIPUR: A teenage boy, who was severely injured after being hit by a speedy motorcycle in Kalkini Upazila of the district, succumbed to his injuries at the DMCH on Saturday. 

The deceased was identified as Rakib Bepari, 15, son of Dadan Bepari, a resident of Kalai Sarderer Char area of Purba Enayetnagar in the upazila. He was an auto-van driver by profession.

It was known that Rakib used to run a battery-run three-wheeler for living. He was riding his battery-run auto-van on Friday. At noon, a speedy motorcycle hot the auto-van from behind in Samiterhat intersection in the upazila, leaving him critically injured.

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed him to Kalkini Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor referred Rakib to the DMCH following the deterioration of his condition. 

Later on, Rakib succumbed to his injuries at the DMCH on Saturday morning while undergoing treatment.

Kalkini PS OC Nurul Amin confirmed the incident, adding that necessary steps would be taken in this connection.
