European Union (EU) Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller met BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other BNP leaders on Sunday.

The meeting over, speaking to reporters at BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office,  BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said, "The discussions focused on Bangladesh's electoral roadmap, reforms, economy, and other issues vital in the country's current context."

"We discussed, when the election will be held, our views on it, and our stance on the reforms," he said.

Khasru said, "We discussed the roadmap of Bangladesh's 13th general  election. We said it is very important to hold the election within this year."

He said the interim government should focus directly on holding the election, rather than considering other options, to hand over power to an elected government and restoring democracy.

Khasru said a country cannot function for a long time under an undemocratic system as such a government lacks political weight, connection with the people and effective mobilisation process.

He said the people are also unable to voice their opinions or give feedbacks in an undemocratic system. So, we insist on returning to democratic process as soon as possible.

The EU envoy's meeting with Fakhrul and Bnp leaders continued for an hour.

BNP Standing Committee members Dr Abdul Moyeen Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Organising Secretary Shama Obed attended the meeting.

Regarding reforms, Khasru said they told the EU envoy that reforms on which a consensus has been reached can be implemented immediately without further delay.

He said, "The reforms on which consensus has not been reached will be presented to the people during the election in the coming days to seek the public mandate."

He said if BNP gets  the mandate it will present the reform proposals in Parliament seeking its approval through  discussions and debates.
He said they also discussed the country's economy.

In response to a question, Khasru said if BNP comes to power, it will revive the economy. "We will also definitely support programmes initiated by the interim government. We will implement  BNP's economic programmes if the people elect us."

He said the EU envoy informed them that European investors are eager to come to Bangladesh.

He said BNP welcomes the investors.
