Dear Sir,
At an age when children should be holding books or sports equipment, many of our young generation are falling into drug addiction. In urban areas, it is common to see street children carrying plastic bags containing "Dandy," a harmful glue used as an intoxicant. This substance contains dangerous chemicals that provide temporary euphoria but lead to severe mental and physical health issues.
According to the Department of Narcotics Control, there are around 7 million drug addicts in the country, including over 400,000 children and teenagers. UNICEF estimates that around 75,000 children in Dhaka are addicted to "Dandy." This addiction is cheap, readily available, and suppresses hunger, making it popular among street children.
We must take immediate action to protect our future generation. Public education on the dangers of drug addiction, strict enforcement of drug laws, and proper educational programs are essential. Strengthening family bonds, providing emotional support, and promoting sports and hobbies can help reintegrate these children into a healthy life.
