BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the it is possible to hold the next parliamentary election by July-August this year.
He said that the BNP Standing Committee in a meeting held a threadbare discussion regarding the Chief Adviser's remarks on election.
The meeting thinks that the existing political and economic crises will deepen if the next Jatiya Sangsad election is delayed.
Mirza Fakhrul made the remarks while addressing a press conference at the BNP Chairperson's Political Office at Gulshan in the capital early Tuesday (January 14) afternoon.
The press conference was organized to brief journalists about the agenda of discussion at the BNP Standing Committee meeting held on Monday night.
"We have been saying repeatedly that there is no alternative to an elected government. It's an integral part of democracy. We think that holding the next parliamentary election is possible by the middle of this year, i.e. by July-August. Because of it, we call upon the interim government, Election Commission and all the political parties to reach a consensus so that we can hold the election by the middle of this year for the greater interest of the nation," he said.
The BNP Secretary General said since the Election Commission (EC) has already been reconstituted, the Standing Committee members opined at the Monday night's meeting that there was no reason to delay the national election.
Besides, question does not arise at all to hold the local government election before the Jatiya Sangsad election. It is possible to hold the election by the month of July 2025.
The BNP Secretary General also strongly criticized the interim government's move to impose VAT and tax on essentials and hike the price of gas. "The interim government's move will aggravate the public sufferings," he said.
