FENI, Jan 14: Local people formed a human chain on Tuesday, demanding implementation of dredging activities to prevent erosion by the Muhuri River in Purba Sonapur and Amtala areas in Sonagazi Upazila of the district.

They formed the human chain in the area broken by the Muhuri River. It was presided over by Amirabad Union BNP President Noor Uddin.

Speakers said, as the river is crooked in these areas, it is causing erosion and breaking living houses. So, they demanded straightening the river in these areas by dredging.

A local Shahjahan Mia said, his two decimals of land were devoured by the river, forcing him to take shelter on embankment along with his family members; in the past, over 50 houses were eroded.

Amirabad Union BNP President Noor Uddin  requested water resources adviser for taking necessary measures for rapid dredging to protect  houses and properties.

Supervising Engineer of Water Development Board Majedur Rahman said, "Studies are going on about erosion by Muhuri, Kahua and Silonia rivers. Today we came to see a vast char on the other side of the river. We'll give report about how government can bring that char under use."

The human chain was attended by people from all walks of life. Among others, Union BNP General Secretary   Nurujjaman, local social activists Amir Hossain,  Abdur Rob, Abul Kalam, Faruk Hossain, Selim, Shahabuddin, victims Siddiq Maji, Anu Sayed, Riad and hundreds of locals.
