He is son of Nazrul Islam of the village. He is first year's student of honours in Political Science at Pabna Shahid M Mansur Ali Degree College.

According to family members, Ariful took part in Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, and on August 4  he received nine bullets at Pabna Shahid Chattar; nerve of his abdomen got torn; he was admitted to Pabna Sadar Hospital; to save his life, one part of his feeding tube was cut by urology and surgery specialist Dr Mehedi Ibne Mostafa.

Later on, two bullets were operated out. After seven days he was referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for treatment. He was treated at DMCH for 12 days, but his physical condition was not improving. Then, he was referred to Combined Military Hospital (CMH).  In November, 2024, two more bullets were operated out at the CMH.

A recent visit to the house of Ariful Islam found his mother Kulsum Khatun in tension about ensuring proper treatment of his son.

Ariful said, "I took part in all programmes of the student movement. After being bullet-hit, different parts of my body became inactive. So far, in three operations, three bullets and one rubber bullet were removed. Still there are five bullets in my body. I can't walk properly. I get less energy. I want to recover and run a job for serving people of the country."
