Digestive diseases are disorders of the digestive system, sometimes called the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. During digestion, food and drink are broken down into smaller parts (called nutrients) that the body can absorb and use as energy and building blocks for cells. The digestive system consists of the esophagus (food tube), stomach, large and small intestines, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.

The first signs of digestive system problems often include one or more of the following symptoms: bleeding, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, incontinence, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, and weight gain or loss. A digestive disease is any health problem that occurs in the digestive system. The condition can range from mild to severe. Some common problems include heartburn, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and lactose intolerance.

Other digestive disorders include gallstones, cholecystitis, and cholangitis; rectal problems, such as rectal fissures, hemorrhoids, proctitis, and rectal prolapse; esophageal problems, such as strictures (narrowing), achalasia, and esophagitis; stomach problems, including gastritis, gastric ulcers (usually caused by Helicobacter pylori infection), and cancer; liver problems, such as hepatitis B or hepatitis C, cirrhosis, liver failure, and autoimmune and alcoholic hepatitis; pancreatitis and pancreatic pseudocysts; bowel problems, such as polyps and cancer, infections, celiac disease, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, diverticulitis, malabsorption, short bowel syndrome, and intestinal ischemia; and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), peptic ulcer disease, and hiatal hernia. Tests for digestive problems include colonoscopy, upper GI endoscopy, capsule endoscopy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and endoscopic ultrasound.

Digestion generally varies from person to person. For those whose food is not digested properly, it is possible to strengthen digestion by following a proper diet, regular exercise, and some rules. Food should be chewed well as digestive enzymes help in proper digestion of food. You can keep lemon with food as it helps to digest food very easily. Eating enough calcium-rich foods every day is also beneficial. Many people give up milk altogether due to lactose intolerance, but in this case, you should keep the habit of eating a little milk instead of giving it up completely or you can eat lactose-free milk. Yogurt can be used as an alternative to milk as it is very helpful in improving digestion and contains beneficial bacteria for the gut. Apart from meeting calcium and protein requirements, it also helps in digestion. Drinking green tea or mint tea twice a day can help as the antioxidants present in them aid digestion.

Including more fiber in the diet is also beneficial. Foods rich in fiber absorb water easily, helping to improve digestion. Regularly eating vegetables, fruits, salads, chia seeds, and strawberries is recommended. Fruits and vegetables that are high in water content, such as watermelon, cucumber, tomato, and gourd, should be included in the diet. Drinking 10-12 glasses of water daily is essential, but it is important not to drink excess water before and between meals as it can cause indigestion. Dinner should be eaten between 7:30 pm and 8 pm, and it is advised not to eat food late at night. Avoid sleeping immediately after eating; take dinner 2 hours before sleep.

Regular exercise leads to proper digestion of food. Try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise throughout the day, such as walking, jogging, and cycling. Digestion is accelerated by doing exercises that put pressure on the stomach in particular. Breathing exercises are also important as they provide enough oxygen to the body. A good sleep of 7-8 hours is required throughout the day. Make it a habit to wake up early in the morning to improve digestion. It is important to be stress-free, avoid excess oily, salty, and spicy foods, processed foods, and fried foods, and avoid smoking.

Medicines that initially resemble the symptoms may come for digestive problems such as Graphites, Carbo Veg, Abize Can, Magnesium Phos, Raphanus, China, and Nux.
