BNP Secretary General Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said after updating voters' list it should not take more than six months to hold general election.

"it is possible to hold election in July-August this year," he asserted
Speaking at a press conference at BNP Chairperson's Gulshan office he said there is no reason to delay the election after relative stability has been restored in the country.
"The Election Reform Commission formed by the government is also set to present its report Wednesday," Fakhrul said.

He said, "We think that the election can be held in the middle of this year. We do not think there is any justification to further delay the election. The delay will deepen the countrie's political and economic crises."

"BNP has been the major victim of fascism, oppression, torture, and enforced disappearances during AL regime. Who else faced all these? We and Jamaat-e-Islami have been the most affected by fascism," he said.

He said the torture by the Awami League fascist regime was the most severe on BNP and its leaders and activists.

He said, the people do want to see revival of this kind of evil political force in the country.

"Who else will try the fascists if do not we go to power? There is no way for anyone to back out from holding the trials of the fascists that started, The fascists will definitely be tried," Fakhrul said.

He, however, said there should not be any hasty trial to ensure that no question can be raised about it.

Fakhrul observed there could be some differences of opinion among the political parties over the next election, as each political party has its own distinct characteristics and thoughts.

He said BNP is advocating for an immediate election from its perspective, while Jamaat-e-Islami is also offering its opinion on the matter from its own viewpoint.

He said that BNP discussed these issues with the parties that participated in the simultaneous movement and all of them are for an immediate holding of the general election.

"There is no disagreement among us on this matter. All the like-minded parties, including the left leaning and right leaning ones demanded immediate election," he said.

Fakhrul said the Communist Party of Bangladesh demanded immediate election.

He said Jamaat-e-Islami does not seem to have a significant difference with BNP regarding the election. "Just a few days ago Jamaat Ameer said the general election should be held first. So, I don't see any major difference."

Regarding the declaration of the July revolution, Fakhrul said BNP received a draft declaration from interim government adviser Mahfuz Alam, and he requested BNP to give its opinion on the matter.

"The matter is so sensitive and important that it cannot be done on one day's notice. We discussed this, we are discussing more. We need to discuss it with other parties," he said.

He said, BNP needs to discuss the issue with  constitutional experts as there are many things in the declaration related to the constitution. "So, we need time. We're discussing it."

Fakhrul said there is no alternative to elected government, as it is the cornerstone of democracy.

He assarted that, there is no need to hold other elections before the general election.

Fakhrul called upon the interim government and the Election to hold the general election by the middle of this year.

In response to a question about BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's health condition Fakhrul said, "We've received updates about her condition. She is now  mentally and physically much better than before."

Khaleda Zia was admitted to the London Clinic, a specialised hospital, on January 8 for advanced treatment under the supervision of liver specialist Professor John Patrick Kennedy.

A six-member medical team from Bangladesh, led by  Dr AZM Zahid Hossain accompanied Khaleda Zia during her journey to London by an air ambulance provided by the Emir of Qatar.

Asked, Dr Zahid said the London Clinic doctors reviewed Khaleda's medical history, including conditions related to her liver, kidneys, and heart, in consultation with the Bangladeshi physicians who accompanied her.

Among others BNP Standing Committee Member Dr Abdul Moin Khan was present at the press confrerence.

"Madam (Khaleda) is better than before. Routine tests are being conducted by the doctors. Treatment is being provided based on the test reports and some changes have been made to her treatment protocol," he said.

Khaleda Zia is getting food prepared at the residence of the BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in London, said Dr Zahid.

He said Tarique and his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, personally serve their home-made food to Khaleda at the hospital four times a day.
