Matiur Rahman, a former member of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), has been placed on a three-day remand in a case filed over keeping illegal arms.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Nazmin Akhter passed the order on Wednesday after Investigation Officer Md Rubel Mia, a sub-inspector of Bhatara Police Station, produced Matiur before the court with a 10-day remand prayer.
Meanwhile, claiming himself innocent, Matiur told the court the arms for which this case was filed was licensed. So, he appealed to the court to grant him bail and reject the remand prayer.
Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruqi, representing the state, argued in favor of the remand. After hearing the arguments, the court granted a three-day remand.
Earlier, Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Matiur Rahman from the Basundhara Residential Area in the capital early Wednesday.
According to the case documents, police found a shot gun from Matiur’s residence. Twenty-five rounds of lead cartridges were listed in connection with the weapon, only one round of ammunition was found. Besides, three mobile phones were also recovered from their residence.
The license of the weapon had expired in 2021, and Matiur was unable to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the missing round of ammunition.
The remand application said the evidence showed that Matiur unlawfully possessed an expired firearm and ammunition with ill intent. So, to know the details, determine the purpose of the missing ammunition, and to investigate if Matiur has other firearms or distributed the missing round, police pleaded for a 10-day remand.
After hearing the both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.
Matiur became a subject of controversy due to a high-profile sacrificial goat, which was booked for Tk 15 lakh, by his son during the last Eid-ul-Azha.
Besides, he was accused in number of cases, including two graft cases, filed by the ACC on charges of amassing illegal assents on December 15, 2024.
