Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam emphasized the government's commitment to transforming the police force into an independent and professional institution.
He made these remarks on Wednesday morning at a passing-out ceremony of the 40th Cadet Sub-Inspector (SI) batch held at Police Academy in Sardah under Charghat ipazila of Rajshahi.
The IGP stated, "The interim government is working diligently to depoliticize the police and develop it as a neutral organization. This effort aligns with the objectives of the Police Reform Commission, and we are united in this noble mission."
Highlighting the evolving role of law enforcement, the IGP urged officers to contribute meaningfully to Bangladesh's progress. "Sub-Inspectors (SIs) hold a vital position as they handle the investigation of 90% of criminal cases. Ensuring public safety, protecting property, and maintaining law and order are the primary responsibilities of the police force," he added.
He also stressed the importance of professionalism and empathy in service delivery. "Those seeking help at police stations should never feel disrespected or mistreated by your behavior. Remember, you are public servants, and you must execute your responsibilities with utmost dedication," he urged the officers.
The event also marked the passing-out ceremony of the 40th Cadet Sub-Inspector (SI) batch, with 480 cadets successfully completing their training. Initially, 823 cadets began their one-year foundational training on November 5, 2023. However, due to various allegations and disciplinary issues, 312 cadets were discharged from service after show-cause notices.
Police Academy sources revealed that the training program faced delays, with the original conclusion scheduled for November 4, 2024. The closing parade was postponed twice due to unavoidable circumstances. Issues such as unruly behavior, lack of focus during classes, and other disciplinary infractions led to the dismissal of multiple cadets over the training period.
At the ceremony, the IGP inspected the parade and presented medals to top-performing trainees. Among the awardees were-- Best academic performance: Cadet (SI) Md. Badiuzzaman, Best in field activities: Trainee Cadet (SI) Md. Nazrul Islam, Best shooter and swimmer: Trainee Cadet (SI) Nayan Kumar Dhali, and Best overall performance: Trainee Cadet (SI) Md. Ariful Islam.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md. Rezaul Karim served as the parade commander during the event. The IGP concluded his speech by reiterating the government's dedication to fostering a competent and impartial police force capable of meeting the nation’s law enforcement needs.
