Road mishaps claim 9 lives in 6 dists

Nine people were killed and four others injured in separate road accidents in six districts - Jhenidah, Munshiganj, Brahmanbaria, Rajshahi, Narayanganj and Patuakhali.

JHENIDAH: A schoolboy was killed in a motorcycle accident in Maheshpur Upazila of the district on Wednesday morning.
The accident took place at around 9 am in front of Maheshpur Upazila Health Complex.
The deceased was identified as Naeem Islam, 14, son of Assistant Professor of the History Department at Maheshpur Government Degree College Rafiqul Islam, a resident of Bhalaipur Village in the upazila. He was a ninth grader at Maheshpur Government Pilot Secondary School.

Police and local sources said that the motorcycle driven by Naeem coming from the direction of Bhilpur hit a roadside tree in front of the health complex in the morning after losing its control over the steering while while trying to give way to a private car coming from the other direction. Naeem died on the spot.

Being informed, police recovered the body.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maheshpur Police Station (PS) Faiz Uddin confirmed the incident.

SREENAGAR, MUNSHIGANJ: A motorcyclist was killed and another sustained injuries in a collision between a motorcycle and an auto-rickshaw on the Dhaka-Mawa highway in Sreenagar Upazila of the district on Tuesday night. 

The accident took place at around 8 pm near the Dhaka-bound service lane at Shologhar Bus Stand of the upazila. 

The deceased was identified as Jony, 30, a resident of Lalbagh in Dhaka and an employee at a private company. 

The injured person is Riad, 26, hails from the same area.

According to local sources, the accident occurred when Jony along with his pillion passenger Riad was riding the motorcycle on the highway and collided head-on with a three-wheeler coming from the opposite direction. Both of them were injured at that time. 

Locals then rescued the injured and rushed them to Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Jony dead. 

Riad, who suffered a fractured spine, was referred to a hospital in Dhaka for advanced treatment. 
 
Dr Musa Ibrahim, physician at Sreenagar Upazila Health Complex, confirmed the death of Jony and reported Riad's critical condition. 

BRAHMANBARIA: A man was killed in a road accident in Sadar Upazila of the district on Tuesday. 

The accident took place in Dumping Station area under Brahmanbaria Municipality at noon. 

The deceased was identified as Al-Amin, 35, a cleaner of the municipality. 

It was known that a truck hit him while he was littering in trash in the area, which left him critically injured. 

Locals rescued him and took to Brahmanbaria Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

RAJSHAHI: Three people were killed in separate road accidents in the district.

A teacher of Rajshahi University (RU), who was injured after falling from a motorcycle on Monday, succumbed to his injuries at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) early Tuesday. 

Deceased Dr Puranjit Mohaldar was an associate professor of Department of Bengali at RU.

It was known that Dr Puranjit fell from a running motorcycle in Kajla area adjacent to the university on Monday noon, which left him critically injured.

He was then rescued and taken to the RMCH.

Later on, he succumbed to his injuries at 2:35 am on Tuesday at the hospital while undergoing treatment.

Earlier, two motorcyclists were killed after being hit by a trolley in Bagha Upazila of the district on Monday night. 

The accident took place at around 8:45 pm at Sajer Battala under the upazila.

The deceased were identified as Faisal Hossain, 15, son of Babar Ali, and Nasir Uddin, 20, son of Manik Hossain. Both of them were residents of Mominpur Bagna Village in Lalpur Upazila of Natore.

Police sources said that Faisal and Nasir were returning home at night riding on a motorcycle. On the way, when they reached Sajer Battala area, they were hit by a truck coming from the opposite direction and fell on the road. At that time, a sugarcane-laden trolley ran over them, leaving them seriously injured.

They were then rescued and rushed to the RMCH, where the on-duty doctor declared the duo dead.

Bagha PS OC AFM Asaduzzaman confirmed the incident.

NARAYANGANJ: Two motorcyclists were killed and another was injured in a road accident at Siddhirganj in the district on Monday. 

The accident took place in front of the Adamjee Export Processing Zone (AEPZ) at around 2:30 pm. 

The deceased were identified as Suvo and Imon, residents of Mojibbag area in the upazila. 

Injured Rabin said, "We three friends were heading towards Siddhirganj Pool riding on a motorcycle. When, we arrived in AEPZ area, the motorcycle collided with an auto-rickshaw, and we fell on the road. At that moment, a truck ran them over Suvo and Imon, leaving them dead on the spot."

Being informed, police recovered the bodies and sent those to Narayanganj General Hospital morgue for autopsies.

Siddhirganj PS Inspector Omor Faruque confirmed the incident, adding that police seized the truck and detained its driver in this connection. 

BAUPHAL, PATUAKHALI: A driver of a TomTom (local vehicle) was killed and two passengers were injured as the vehicle overturned in Bauphal Upazila of the district on Monday. 

The accident took place on the Golabari-Kalishura road area of the upazila at around 5 pm.
 
The deceased was identified as Ridoy Boyati, 23, son of Dulal Boyati, a resident of Chandrapara Village under Madanpur Union in the upazila. 

Locals said that the TomTom overturned in the area while it was going to Golabari from Bauphal, which left three people including its driver injured. 

Locals then rescued the injured and took them to Bauphal Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor declared Ridoy dead.
