A young woman, who jumped into the Padma River from the ferry Baigar on the Daulatdia-Paturia route remains missing, even after three days of intensive search efforts.
Daulatdia Naval Police Outpost in charge inspector Emran Mahmud Tuhin confirmed the incident.
The missing woman, Fazilatunnesa, 30, was a resident of Nalta area in Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira district.
According to reports, the woman jumped from the ferry around 11 AM on Monday while it was traveling from Paturia to Daulatdia. Witnesses on the ferry stated that the woman, clad in a burqa, leapt into the river from the left-side deck. The incident occurred in full view of other passengers who were unable to intervene in time.
Following the incident, personnel from Naval Police and Fire Service launched a rescue operation but their efforts have so far been unsuccessful.
Inspector Tuhin speculated that strong currents in the Padma River might have carried the woman downstream.
The family of the missing woman informed authorities that she had a history of mental health issues.
Meanwhile, the Naval Police continue their patrols along the river in search of her. Inspector Tuhin assured that legal actions would follow once her whereabouts are determined.
