Arrested Bangladesh Eye Hospital's child eye specialist Dr Shahedara Begum on Thursday (January 16) swooped on journalists after receiving bail from a court in Dhaka.

The accused Dr Shahedara Begum was produced at the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court in Dhaka police. Then the investigation officer (IO) of the case sub-inspector Saiful Alam of Dhanmondi Police Station, pleaded to the court of metropolitan magistrate Masuma Rahman to keep her detained in jail. However, the lawyer of the accused pleaded for her bail. After the hearing, the court granted her bail.
When Dr Shahedara was being taken to the prison cell of the CMM court, she swooped on photojournalists when they went to take her photos. Bangladesh Eye Hospital's employees who accompanied her also barred photojournalists to take her photos and started hurling abusive languages. They also took photos of the journalists present there and also recorded their videos.

Earlier, on Wednesday (January 15) night, police arrested the Dr Shahedara in a case filed by the victim child's father Mahmud Hasan with Dhanmondi Police Station on charge of conducting operation in the wrong eye of his 18-month-old child.

Police arrested her from her Elephant Road residence around 2:00am on Thursday, said Dhanmondi Police Station OC Ali Ahmed Masud.

Dr Shahedara Begum was sent to court showing her arrested in the case, the OC added.

Irtiza Ariz Hasan was taken to the Bangladesh Eye Hospital at Dhanmondi on Tuesday for treatment in one of his eyes. But Dr Shahedara mistakenly conducted a surgery in his healthy eye.

The doctor said there was a dirt-like object in the left eye of the child. Irtiza Ariz, who underwent necessary medical tests required before the surgery, was given anesthesia and taken to the operation theatre.

However, after the child was brought out of the operation theatre, the family saw that the surgery was performed on the right eye, instead of his left one.

Then they informed the doctor. The child was taken to the operation theatre again and the surgery was completed on the left eye, the family alleged.
