A Dhaka court has sentenced three people to death for the murder of a man named Zahid Hossain in Savar about 12 years ago over a prior feud.
Each of the suspects has also been fined Tk 10,000.
Dhaka Fifth Additional District and Sessions Judge Israt Jahan Munni delivered the verdict in the case on Thursday.
The convicts are Kazi Ahsan Taqbir, who hails from Pirojpur, Md Kajol, who hails from Rangpur, and Lal Chan, who hails from Savar.
Kajol was brought to court for the verdict in the case. He was taken back to jail after an arrest warrant was issued following the announcement.
The two other suspects are absconding. In addition to the sentences, the court has issued arrest warrants for them.
Zahid had prior enmity with the accused, the case documents said. On Jul 17, 2013, Lal Chan called him away from his house. He was taken to the Hizalpara area of Arapara, hacked with a weapon and seriously injured. Locals rescued him and rushed him to Savar's Enam Medical College Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit.
The victim's father, Hajji Md Anowar Hossain, filed a murder case at Savar Model Police Station over the incident. Sub Inspector Jahidul Islam from the north Dhaka district wing of the Detective Branch filed the chargesheet in the case on Aug 30, 2015.
The court indicted the suspects on Mar 2, 2016 and ordered the case to trial. The verdict in the case was then delivered on Thursday.
