Students of Government Titumir College have blocked the railway line in Mohakhali as part of their ongoing movement, "Barasat Barricade to North City," demanding university status for the institution.
The blockade began at around 3:45 PM on Monday.
At approximately 3:30 PM, over a hundred students marched from the college gate towards Mohakhali. After blocking the roads, they moved to the railway tracks, demanding that their plea be met.
"We are protesting for a legitimate cause. As part of our pre-announced program, we have blocked both rail and road routes today," said Nayek Nur Mohammad, a student involved in the demonstration.
Due to the blockade, traffic movement on the Jahangir Gate-Mohakhali route has come to a standstill, resulting in severe congestion. Additionally, the Upakul Express train, which was en route from Kamalapur, was forced to halt.
Police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were seen requesting the protesting students to clear the roads.
This is not the first time the students have taken such actionon
November 18 last year, they staged a similar railway blockade in
Mohakhali for the same demand.
Earlier, as per pre-announced road blockade, the students of Government Titumir College blocked Gulshan Link Road putting a barricade around 12.20 PM on Monday, demanding the upgradation of the institution to a university.
The blockade halted vehicle movement on both sides, however, some were seen announcing that no vehicles, except emergency ones, would be allowed to pass until their demand was met.
Meanwhile, six students are continuing their hunger strike for the sixth consecutive days in front of the college gate.
The vehicle movement towards Mohakahli-Gulshan was suspended following the blockade.
But there found no presence of law enforcement agencies.
The students had initially planned to start their blockade programme at 11AM, but it was delayed due to Saraswati Puja celebrations on campus, said Mainuddin, a master's student of the Economics department.
