Jahangirnagar University has temporarily suspended 289 activists of the Bangladesh Chhatra League for attacks on students during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement protests.

Nine teachers have also been suspended from their jobs over allegations of abetting the attacks.

Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Kamrul Ahsan announced the decision after an emergency university syndicate meeting that ended at 3am on Tuesday.

The meeting began at 11am on Monday at the university's new administrative building. "Two hundred and eighty-nine Chhatra League leaders and activists have been temporarily suspended in connection with the attack on students of Jahangirnagar University during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement. In addition, a further investigation committee has been formed," said Ahsan.

"The Chhatra League activists and leaders who completed their studies will have their certificates suspended. The results of those who have given exams and oral examinations will be suspended. Those who are regular students will be temporarily suspended." He continued: "Nine teachers have been temporarily suspended on charges of involvement in the attack on the university by the Chhatra League and the police during the movement. The initial investigation has found allegations of involvement in the attack against several other teachers. A structured committee has been formed to collect detailed information and evidence about them." �"bdnews24.com
