Flowers make Kushtia farmers self-reliant

KUSHTIA, Jan 6: Growers in Kushtia district have achieved bumper production of flower this season due to favourable weather and necessary agro-input support.
Now, a good number of farmers have become self-reliant and changed their lot through cultivating flower this season.
The farmers in six upazilas of the district are happy as they are getting fair price from the sale of their produce. They are now passing busy hours in collecting flower.
Flowers can be cultivated three times a year, and it can change the fate of the farmers in six upazilas of the district, said growers.
According to the local Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), a total of 1,500 hectares of land have been brought under flower cultivation in the district this year. A total of 8,000 people are engaged in flower cultivation and business, sources said.
By cultivating marigold variety on a bigha of land, a farmer can earn Tk 50,000 to 60,000, and by cultivating gladiolus on the same land one can earn Tk 80,000 to 90,000, said DAE officials.
Farmer Monirul Mia of Mirzapur village under Khoksa upazila said, "I cultivated flower spending Tk 16 to 18 thousand on my one bigha of land. I am now expecting a bumper production of the produce."
General Secretary of Kushtia District Flower Producers Association Kazi Hafiz told The Daily Observer, flower growers are now purchasing a lot of flowers before the arrival of the Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year.
He also said, over 10 to 15 flower-laden trucks go to Dhaka, Chittagong, Barisal, Sylhet, Narayanganj, Rangpur, Rajshahi, Feni, Comilla and Khulna and other districts from here every day.
A bunch of 8-10 big garlands of marigold is being sold at Tk 180 to 200 which was sold at Tk 120 to 140 around a couple of months ago, said another farmer Karim Ali of Jodobaira village under Kumarkali upazila.
When contacted, Deputy Director of the DAE here Kinkon Chowdhury said, the cultivation of flower has increased significantly due to favourable weather and fertility of soil in the district.
"Flower is a perishable product but there is not much opportunity to preserve it for long," he added.
As a result, flowers worth over Tk 2 to 2.5 crore are damaged every season, he also added.
DAE Agriculturist Shamsuddin Mia said, the farmers of the district are showing interest in flower cultivation in more lands as it has proved
profitable.
