Sealdah erosion turns severe at Tungipara

GOPALGANJ, May 4: At least 30,000 people in 10 villages of Tungipara Upazila in the district are facing communication disruption due to erosion by the Sealdah River.  

According to local sources, a total of 250-foot stretch of Sorabari-Chithlia Road in the upazila has been eroded by the river.

On Wednesday (Apr 30) afternoon, the breaking occurred, disrupting communication for at least 30,000 people of these villages including Tarail, Jamai Bazar, Mamar Bazar, Sorabari, Chithlia, and Lebutala. 

Lota Biswas, Tuhon Molla, van driver Nazrul Islam and Monika Biswa, dwellers of Sorabari Village, said, severe current of the river also caused breaking to the road earlier.  Now culvert has also collapsed, halting transports.

There are one high school, two primary schools, bazaar, water treatment plant, community clinics and different institutions in the eroded areas.  

Tungipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Moinul Haq said, he has already inspected he broken spot and provided financial assistance among victim families. Victims will be given houses in their own lands, he added.

And after getting necessary allocation, the road will be repaired soon, the UNO  added.
