SHARIATPUR, Jan 10: The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) estate in Shariatpur district has not been developed in the last 30 years as the entrepreneurs did not set up industrial units there, sources said.
Deputy Manager (DM) of Shariatpur BSCIC Estate Md. Monir Hossain said, the main barrier to the development of the estate here is fund shortage.
Official sources said, BSCIC had acquired 13.83 acres of land at Balakhana village under Sadar upazila, two kilometres north of the district headquarters, in 1987. At the initial stage, the allocated money was spent to acquire land, construction of administrative buildings and pump houses, the sources added.
Businessman Abdul Kader Miah of the village said to this correspondent, "The earth filling had been completed a few years ago, but since then no further work has been done to establish the proposed industrial estate. As a result, the acquired land worth Tk 4 crore now serves as pasture land for the stray cattle head."
Manager of Luna Bakery at Shariatpur BSCIC Estate Mizanur Rahman said, "Except some 5/6 bakeries, no industries have been set up here in the last 30 years. A few officers and employees, who were appointed, are just drawing their salaries without any work."
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Shariatpur Md. Kabir Hossain said, "The district is famous for growing different crops, vegetables and raw materials like bamboo, canes, coconut, cotton, jute, wheat, pulses and potato which can be used as raw materials in different industrial units in the BSCIC estate. Besides, hundreds of people including housewives and young girls would be able to earn extra by making different household materials."
A farm owner Biswanath Babu of Shariatpur town told this correspondent that small and medium size agro-based industries can be set up in the district especially in BSCIC area which in turn will create employment opportunities for hundreds of jobless people here.
Mayor of Shariatpur Municipality Md. Rafikul Islam Kotowal said, if the BSCIC estate in Shariatpur is developed, about 10,000 people will be employed in the entire industrial unit.
He demanded immediate development of the estate for the best interest of the people.
