The government has announced that a new curriculum for secondary education will be introduced starting in 2027, beginning with grade six. The curriculum will be expanded gradually each year to cover all grades up to twelve.
The announcement came during a press conference held on Wednesday at the Ministry of Education.
Education Adviser CR Abrar addressed the media, accompanied by Siddiq Zobair, Senior Secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, and KM Kabirul Islam, Secretary of the Technical and Madrasah Education Division.
Abrar said, “If we envision a new future that embraces technology, inclusiveness, responsibility, and justice, we must move beyond the current curriculum. Achieving that will require open discussions and national consensus.”
He also noted that although the 2012 curriculum was reinstated due to exceptional circumstances, it will remain in effect next year. However, he expressed hope that a strong foundation for the revised curriculum will be established during his tenure.
Senior Secretary Siddiq Zobair said that the government does not plan to implement the new curriculum in all grades at once.
“Starting with grade six in 2027, the curriculum will be gradually rolled out through to grade twelve,” he said.
According to the National Curriculum and Textbook Board (NCTB), preliminary work on the revised curriculum has already begun. In response to questions from reporters, Abrar also mentioned that an online teacher transfer system for colleges will begin on July 1. A similar system for schools is expected to launch in the following months.
Additionally, the government has approved a Tk 2,000 crore bond and Tk 200 crore in cash to support retirement and welfare benefits for MPO-listed private teachers and staff.
Until last year, the new curriculum had been in effect in grades 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 8, and 9. It was scheduled to be implemented in grades 4, 5, and 10 this year, completing the rollout at the secondary level.
Following the July 2024 political transition, the government decided to halt the implementation at the secondary level and reinstate the 2012 curriculum. The primary level continues to follow the revised curriculum, and textbooks for 2026 will reflect that structure. NCTB reports that updates to current textbooks are nearing completion.
