A Manikganj court has granted a four-day remand for former Member of Parliament and ex-captain of Bangladesh national cricket team, Naimur Rahman Durjoy, in connection with an explosives case.

The order was passed on Thursday by Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Sadbir Yasir Ahsan Chowdhury, who also directed that he be sent to jail following the remand period.

Durjoy was produced before the court around 3:30 PM by Manikganj Sadar Police, who had sought a 10-day remand in an explosives case filed with Manikganj Sadar Police Station.

After hearing arguments from both prosecution and defense, the court granted a four-day remand.

The state’s case was represented by Special Public Prosecutor of the Women and Children Tribunal, Humayun Kabir. On the defense side, senior lawyers including Advocate Nazrul Islam Badsha and Azizul Haque sought bail and opposed the remand plea.

Durjoy was elected MP from Manikganj-1 as a candidate of the ruling Awami League in both the 2014 and 2018 national elections. After reportedly going into hiding since August 5, he was finally arrested by district’s Detective Branch (DB) of police from his residence at Lalmatia in Dhaka on Wednesday night.

In addition to the explosives case, multiple cases have been filed against Durjoy over allegations of corruption and financial irregularities.

Earlier this year, on January 21, a Dhaka court ordered the seizure of a 2,523 square-foot apartment, land and three vehicles owned by him in Lalmatia.

Furthermore, the court also ordered a freeze on 12 of his bank accounts.

Confirming the arrest and remand, Manikganj Sadar Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Amanullah said the court granted a four-day remand after police sought 10 days for interrogation in the explosives case.
