Kushtia growers profit from pea farming

KUSHTIA, Jan 14: The cultivation of pea has been increasing here as the farmers got its ample output and fair price in the last few years.
This year more lands have been brought under pea cultivation as the farmers have earned much profit last year, said sources.
Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) in Kushtia Kinkon Chakroboti said, "Pea has been cultivated on five acres of land in char areas of Khoksa upazila. The cultivation is increasing day by day due to high demand."
DAE office sources said, the marginal farmers cultivated and produced pea on more lands last year as they incurred loss from the cultivation of other crops in the previous year.
Pea seeds were distributed free of cost to some farmers of Maligram village under Kumarkali upazila of the district and they got bumper yield of the crop last year, the sources added.
Besides, the weather of the district is favourable for pea cultivation and it takes only 60 days to get the production, the sources further added.
A pea farmer Rahim Ali said, he cultivated pea on one acre of land spending Tk 15,000 this year and earned profit of Tk 70,000.
Besides, the farmers do not have to spend extra for fertiliser, pesticide and other inputs like in Boro paddy farming.
