NCP rejects BNP tie, seeks reform first

Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) has categorically denied reports of potential alliance discussions with BNP, whilst outlining ambitious reform agenda that prioritises justice and constitutional restructuring over immediate electoral participation.

Mushfiq Us Salehin, Joint Member Secretary of NCP, exclusively told Daily Observer that BNP has made no formal proposal for political cooperation.

This clarification comes amid widespread speculation about opposition alliances ahead of national elections.

Party's strategic focus centres on fundamental state reforms, justice delivery and establishing Constituent Assembly rather than traditional electoral calculations. Salehin emphasised that electoral considerations remain secondary until substantial progress materialises in judicial reforms and constitutional restructuring.

Regarding local government elections, NCP advocates phased implementation preceding national polls, viewing these contests as crucial testing ground for Election Commission's capabilities.

“Local elections are crucial for ensuring civic services,” Salehin said, highlighting party's commitment to grassroots democratic processes despite broader reform priorities.

Party supports proportional representation system specifically for Parliament's Upper House, indicating willingness to embrace electoral innovations that could reshape Bangladesh's democratic landscape. This position distinguishes NCP from traditional parties favouring existing first-past-the-post arrangements.

NCP's emergence as potential third force hinges on capturing youth constituency with Salehin acknowledging significant demographic shift in upcoming elections.

“A significant number of young voters will be casting their votes for the first time," he observed, describing these citizens as future nation-builders whose 'expectations and aspirations for the country will be reflected in our politics.

Party's cautious approach towards electoral participation reflects broader strategy of prioritising institutional reforms over immediate political gains. This positioning could appeal to voters seeking alternatives to established political dynamics whilst maintaining focus on systemic changes rather than personality-driven politics.

NCP's stance suggests growing emphasis on reform-oriented politics among emerging parties, potentially influencing broader political discourse as Bangladesh approaches crucial electoral period.
